Seax, Windlass
Seax, Windlass The seax, or sax, was universal in Northern Europe. Always single-edged, the profile of the seax varied from small knives with a blade length of approx. 7 cm to swords with a blade length of up to approx. 70 cm. The original version of this large knife served from work to cutting work, on shipboard and for fighting if a or was not available. Made by Windlass Steelcrafts, blade material: 1055 high carbon steel, this replica has a brass lobed pommel and guard. The wood grip is studded with brass tacks for a very secure and comfortable grip. The blade is etched on both sides, flat ground, and capable of taking and holding a razor sharp edge. The remnants of this Seax can be seen in the British Museum. This sax is suitable as a decorative object to add to your collection, as well as being an excellent prop, e.g. to complete your costume. Small Viking Knife, Damascus Steel Blade, Wood/Bone Handle with Serpents
Small Viking Knife with Damascus Steel Blade and Wood-and-Bone Handle with Twin Serpents This hand-made Viking Age knife features a 256-layer Damascus steel* blade. The wooden handle is a real eye-catcher: The top part is crafted from bone and adorned on each side with a handsome motif of the Midgard-Serpent. The grip terminates towards the blade with a brass collar, and the brass butt cap is equipped with a convenient eyelet (for threading a lanyard or drawing the knife from its sheath). The beautiful tanned leather sheath with ornate brass fittings is equipped with a suspension ring allowing for comfortable belt carry. * The terms Damascus steel, damascene or pattern welded designate a compound steel forged out of two or more different types of steel. It is named after its birthplace, the Syrian city of Damascus, a former stronghold of the patterned steel production. As a common practice, a harder high carbon steel and a milder low carbon steel are repeatedly forge welded and folded together. The high carbon steel ensures a higher hardness, a better temperability and longer lasting edge retention, whereas the milder steel confers greater blade flexibility and tensile strength. This procedure, which arose in a time where steel qualities were often low and inconsistent, enables to combine the positive attributes of the various steel grades. Besides, the different shadings generated by the varying carbon content of the alternating layers engender strikingly beautiful patterns, such as the twisted motif called Torsion Damascus pattern or the Rose Damascus pattern. Undoubtedly, these unusual patterns partly explain why inherent magical properties were attributed to the Damascus steel blades of the Middle Ages. Details: - Blade material: Damascus steel (256 layers, 4340 and 1070 steel) - Handle material: wood, animal bone and brass - Overall length: approx. 17 cm - Blade length: approx. 7.5 cm - Weight: approx. 60 g (approx. 125 g with sheath) - Leather-and-brass sheath with carrying ring Specs may slightly vary from piece to piece. The steel used here is not rust-proof and might show slight surface tarnishing in places. We recommend you to maintain the blade on a regular basis, for example using Ballistol Universal Oil, which is ideally suited for steel care. Important notice: - Although fully functional, the knife has a just slightly sharpened edge which may have to be re-ground to improve sharpness if needed. - As the knife is fully hand-crafted, the ornaments may slightly vary from piece to piece. Please also keep in mind that bone is a natural product and variations in bone colour and grain are quite common. Each Viking knife has thus its own very unique handle and above pictures are for reference only. Please note: We do not sell this product to customers under the age of 18. Please provide your birth date when ordering. We'll also need a copy of your ID-card or passport by email, scan, fax or mail. - Product may have sharp cutting edges. Improper or careless use can lead to injuries.
