Seax, Windlass

Product information "Seax, Windlass"

Seax, Windlass

The seax, or sax, was universal in Northern Europe. Carried and used by the Saxons, Angles, Vikings and German tribes, its use probably dated before the fall of Rome and continued on into the early Middle Ages. Always single-edged, the profile of the seax varied from small knives with a blade length of approx. 7 cm to swords with a blade length of up to approx. 70 cm. The original version of this large knife served from work to cutting work, on shipboard and for fighting if a or was not available.

Made by Windlass Steelcrafts, blade material: 1055 high carbon steel, this replica has a brass lobed pommel and guard. The wood grip is studded with brass tacks for a very secure and comfortable grip. The blade is etched on both sides, flat ground, and capable of taking and holding a razor sharp edge. The remnants of this Seax can be seen in the British Museum.

This sax is suitable as a decorative object to add to your collection, as well as being an excellent prop, e.g. to complete your costume.
