Champagne Sword in Wooden Box (French Napoleonic Briquet Sabre)A short-bladed sabre of French origin, the so-called briquet was introduced in the late 18th century and became one of the most popular infantry of the Napoleonic era. The briquet (French for flint stone, fire striker or fire lighter) is believed to owe its name to its shorter size and resemblance to the lighters used by the troops at the time. At first a derisive neologism, it eventually became the official name for this particular type of sabre. During the Napoleonic Wars of the early 19th c., the briquet was not only an effective melee , but also a handy tool used for example to clear undergrowth. Comte de Nieuwerkerke Arming Sword with Scabbard, 14th C.This beautiful arming was originally in the collection of Comte de Nieuwerkerke, a French sculptor and art collector. The find spot of the sword, which is now in the Wallace Collection, London, is unknown. But it is likely that it was found in France, the distinctive corrosion pattern on the blade indicating that it was a river find. It is classified as a Type XV according to Oakeshott´s typology and dated to the period between 1350 and 1400. Given this date, it is likely that the sword was used during the Hundred Years´ War between France and England. This replica has a double-edged blade that tapers sharply towards the tip. Duna Duna Viking Sword with Scabbard, 10th C.This beautiful Viking is a reconstruction of an original find dated to the period between 950 and 1050, and is classified as a type X according to Petersen’s typology of Viking swords. The inscriptions on the blade are a distinctive feature of the original sword, which is now in the collection of the Musée de l’Armée in Paris, France. One side is marked with the well-known inscription of the maker ULFBERHT, a Rhineland bladesmith workshop believed to be one of the first sword “brands” (with about 170 swords dated to the 9th to 11th c., bearing the same inscription +VLFBERHT+, and found throughout Europe, even as far as western Russia). The other side bears the inscription DUNA + DUNA XX, a presumed abbreviation, which exact meaning is still unknown. Irish Gallowglass Two-Handed Sword with Ring Pommel, 16th CenturyThis two-handed is patterned after the massive swords carried by the elite Irish mercenaries of Scottish descent known as gallowglass (also galloglass or galloglas - an anglicization of the Gaelic gallóglaigh / gallóglach that translates literally as "young, foreign soldier"). Between the mid-13th and late 16th c., these fearless, heavily armoured infantrymen fought alongside the kerns, the light infantry who made up the bulk of the Irish forces in the late Middle Ages and Renaissance. The gallowglass originally hailed from the Norse-Gaelic clans of the Scottish Highlands, Argyll and the Hebrides (off the west coast of Scotland), whose Irish ancestors had intermarried with the 10th c. Norse settlers. Dispossessed during the Wars of Scottish Independence, they fled to Ireland, where the Irish chieftains quickly recognized their worth and granted them work, land to settle and rights to supplies in return for their allegiance and military services. Many Irish lords would also often employ gallowglasses to serve as bodyguards. Over the centuries, the gallowglass ranks eventually filled with native Irishmen and "newer" Scottish mercenaries. Die Stadt Pompeji wurde im Jahre 79 n. Chr. durch den Ausbruch des Vesuvs weitestgehend zerstört und unter einer 4 - 6 Meter dicken Ascheschicht begraben. Es ist heute ein Eldorado für Archäologen. Greek Xiphos, Hoplite Sword with ScabbardThe hoplites of Ancient Greece, the brave citizen foot soldiers best known for fighting in a phalanx formation and wielding a thrusting spear or lance (dory) and a large round shield (aspis or hoplon), are commonly depicted with a secondary at their side. One of these battlefield sidearms, a straight, relatively short with double-edged, leaf-shaped blade called the xiphos, was quite popular with the Greek armies (amongst others, the notorious Spartans). Designed for both cutting and thrusting, it was primarily used by the infantry as a backup weapon for close quarter combat or when the spear had been broken, lost or snatched away in the fray. Although surviving examples are extremely scarce, historical illustrations can be found in many ancient Greek artworks, especially in pottery paintings that have stood the test of time. It was used by the Iberian countries or neighbors like the Celtiberians being the most common sword in the area of the peninsula. Roman chroniclers praised the quality of the iron that was used for the construction of the Hispanic ; they were surprised by its cutting ability and flexibility, one of the most prized and sought features in its manufacture. As a curious note, reflecting the effectiveness of these weapons, after the first battles in the Iberian Peninsula, an order was given to Roman troops to reinforced with iron the edges of their shields, possibly due to the cutting power of the falcatas, much higher than the straight swords and sabers. Katana - Enma, Lorenor Zoro, One PieceThis decorative was inspired by the Enma, which pirate hunter Lorenor Zoro (jap. Roronoa Zoro) wields in the anime One-Piece. Enma belongs to the great grade swords and thus to the 2nd rank of the sword classification within the anime and manga. It has an approx. 67.4 cm long, blunt blade made of carbon steel, on which the hamon typical of the Enma is painted yellow/green. The saya and tsuka are made of wood, are purple and have gold lacquered decorative elements made of metal and plastic. A red grip band adorns the upper end of the sheath, while the gold lacquered tsuba in a cloverleaf look and the golden flowers on the grip and sheath round off the overall look. History behind the sword Enma was forged by Shimotsuki Kozaburo in Wano. Due to its special properties, no samurai was able to wield it until it finally ended up with Kouzuki Oden together with its sister sword Amen o Habakiri. These two swords were the only capable of inflicting a wound on Emperor Kaidou and thus his only scar. After Oden's death, Enma came into the possession of his father Sukiyaki, who kept it in order to pass it on to Oden's daughter Kouzuki Hiyori as an heirloom. Enma came into Zoro's possession after Hiyori asked him to leave the national treasure Shusui in its rightful place and offered him Enma as an equivalent sword in exchange. This beautiful Templar sword features a hardened spring steel blade which was tempered to a Rockwell hardness of approx. 48-50 HRC and bears the engraved inscription MILITARIS TEMPLI on one side and three crosses pattée on the other side. It is full-tanged and riveted to the pommel.
