The find spot of the sword, which is now in the Wallace Collection, London, is unknown. But it is likely that it was found in France, the distinctive corrosion pattern on the blade indicating that it was a river find. It is classified as a Type XV according to Oakeshott´s typology and dated to the period between 1350 and 1400. Das Original unserer Rekonstruktion stammt erwiesenermaßen aus der Zeit um 1200-1250, wurde aber dennoch als Relique des Heiligen Mauritius zusammen mit einigen seiner Gebeine in Turin aufbewahrt und verehrt. The inscriptions on the blade are a distinctive feature of the original sword, which is now in the collection of the Musée de l’Armée in Paris, France. One side is marked with the well-known inscription of the maker ULFBERHT, a Rhineland bladesmith workshop believed to be one of the first sword “brands” (with about 170 swords dated to the 9th to 11th c., bearing the same inscription +VLFBERHT+, and found throughout Europe, even as far as western Russia). The other side bears the inscription DUNA + DUNA XX, a presumed abbreviation, which exact meaning is still unknown. Although not a one-to-one replica of an original historical piece, it shows some of the typical characteristics of the two-handed arming swords wielded by 15th century Gothic knights in full suit of . This type of ring hilt longsword is differentiated from others of the same period by its side rings placed on either side of the crossguard (which eventually led to more complex hilt designs developing).
