Medieval Flail with three Stars
The impact known as a flail developed in the 12th century from the peasant’s flail used for threshing, and saw service until the 17th century.
This medieval weapon with a spiked head is commonly, although incorrectly, often referred to as a morning star, especially the variant with the head connected to the grip by a chain (ball-and-chain flail).
The reconstruction we offer here consists of an approx. 52 cm long handle made of ash wood, which is fitted with a metal sleeve at the top end and connected by three metal chains to heavy, star-shaped balls made of high carbon steel. The surface of the steel balls, chains and sleeve was left in its natural state on purpose and has a characteristic out-of-the forge oxide scale layer that lends a rustic, authentic character to the weapon.
This medieval military flail is designed as a collector's or decoration/display piece, and, besides its quality as a collectible, is also perfectly suited as a prop, e.g. to complete your costume.
Details:
- Material: high carbon steel (not stainless!), ash wood handle
- Handle length: approx. 52 cm
- Diameter of the balls / stars (incl. spikes): approx. 10 cm
- Chain length: approx. 21 cm
- Weight: approx. 1.25 kg
Specs may slightly vary from piece to piece.
Slight variations in shape and/or surface finish are quite normal. Above pictures are thus for reference only.
The steel used here is not rust-proof and might show slight surface tarnishing in places. We recommend you to maintain your flail on a regular basis, for example using Ballistol Universal Oil, which is ideally suited for steel care.
